“Joel Shoemaker might just be the most successful LBGTQIA+ author in the history of our contest. His approach to fiction (and writing in general) is positive, quirky, inquisitive, clever, and very humorous.”

When I turned seven years old I was gifted a magic set for my birthday. It wasn’t what I wanted. I don’t remember what I wanted but it definitely, definitely wasn’t magic tricks. So, it took a few months but eventually, boredom got the best of me, and I opened the set.

Now, thirty-some years later, I’m still doing magic. It’s mostly just a hobby, but it really defined my life in a lot of ways. Going through school, somehow, it made me sort of, cool (?) maybe. It was my way to fit in.

Magic was also a gateway drug, so to speak, to theatre. And I almost literally lived those four years in the theatre department — shattering a twenty-plus year participation record in my high school’s thespian society.

Thousands of hours doing high school theatre led me to community theatre and, eventually, to writing my first book, which involves a lot of theatre.

I’m still an avid performer at my local theatre company and on my own as a magician. When I’m not writing and acting, I’m also a librarian.

If you need to bring a little magic to an event you’re planning, reach out!

“Magician to Actor to Writer. It was a most happy accident. The happiest kind there is, only now, now it’s my life, and it’s very much on purpose.”
